Erasmus & International Student Housing Tips
How the Erasmus Program Works in Switzerland
Switzerland isn’t officially in Erasmus but has its own solution: the Swiss-European Mobility Programme (SEMP). Basically Erasmus under another name (this is how Switzerland approaches all European initiatives). SEMP lets you study at ETH or UZH for one or two semesters with similar funding and recognition of credits ETH Zurich SEMP. The application process is straightforward—coordinate with your home university's international office, who will manage most of the paperwork directly with Zurich's universities.
Can I get ETH housing as an exchange student?
Yes, though availability is tight and rooms are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. Submit your application through ETH's Housing Office as soon as you're accepted into your exchange to increase your odds. The link is provided with your admission documentsETH Exchange Housing Info.
Where do Erasmus students live in Zurich?
Erasmus (SEMP) students typically live in student residences like WOKO dorms, shared flats (WGs), or private sublets. ETH and UZH campuses don’t offer traditional dorms themselves for all students.
How early should Erasmus students apply for housing?
As early as possible. Many Erasmus (SEMP) students start applying for rooms at least 3-4 months before arriving. The ETH Housing Office and student residences have strict deadlines, often in June for autumn and November for spring. Waiting until the last minute is a recipe for disaster. Start your search early and secure your spot quicklyETH Housing Deadlines.
Finding Short-Term Housing (Dorms, Sublets)
If you do not get a room allocated by ETH then sublets are your best option. If your stay is short and you can afford it there are many temporary accomodation options as well. Check our short-term housing guide.
Language & Cultural Adaptation Tips
Zurich is famously international—English is widely spoken, especially around ETH and UZH campuses. Still, learning some basic German (particularly Swiss-German phrases) can help integrate quickly. Swiss culture is famously organized and punctual; being on time and respecting quiet hours isn't optional. Check our Student Life in Zurich guide for more cultural pointers.
